Thank you, everyone!

When we started out all those months ago, no one thought we’d get anywhere. However, with unending hard work, a dedicated campaign team, and the finest crew of volunteers anyone could ask for, we went from an obscure campaign making the rounds in the dead of winter, to upstart contender, to the chosen nominee of three parties, to Young Gun, and finally to Congresswoman-elect!

To those who pitched in, in any capacity, I cannot thank you enough for your time, your trust, and your friendship. No candidate can ever win alone, and you all were instrumental in this victory: it belongs to all of us. To those who supported my opponent, rest assured I will be listening to all of my constituents, yourselves included. That is one of the most important duties a Representative has, and I won’t forget it.

Now, however, is truly the time to roll up our sleeves, because now the real hard work starts! Our country urgently needs our help, and I intend to do my part to make sure she gets it. I expect to hear from all of you, both in Washington and at home. I promise you that I’m up to the challenge, and I’m ready and eager to take it on.

Let’s get started!

A FAQ for the federal takeover of health care: what you may not know.

During the roughly six months since the federal takeover of health care was passed, some of the “fog of confusion” so memorably described by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi – whose talent for obfuscation gives new meaning to her hometown’s nickname, the “Fog City” – has indeed lifted, as she predicted. Unfortunately, the picture that’s forming isn’t reassuring. Let’s take a look at some specifics:

Has the heath care takeover lowered costs for families and for businesses?

No. According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, “insurers have asked [state regulators] for premium increases of between 1% and 9% to pay for extra benefits required under the law, according to filings with state regulators. [Insurers] say Congress’s landmark refashioning of U.S. health coverage, which passed in March after a brutal fight, is causing them to pass on more costs to consumers than Democrats predicted.” – “Health Insurers Plan Hikes”, Wall Street Journal, September 8, 2010.

Will the health care takeover improve access to health care for children?

No. According to the Los Angeles Times, many health insurance companies are dropping child-only policies, “because the new federal requirement could create huge and unexpected costs for covering children.” – “Big health insurers to stop selling new child-only policies”, Los Angeles Times, September 21, 2010.

Will the health care takeover lower health care costs?

No. In fact, the new health care law will actually increase costs. The Obama Administration’s own Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released a report that stated that the health care bill “will have negligible effects on total national health spending in the next 10 years.” In fact the report went on to say that health care spending will actually increase at a faster rate. – “Health Outlays Still Seen Rising”, Wall Street Journal, September 8, 2010.

(The new government report released by HHS says President Obama’s health care law will have negligible effects on total national health spending in the next 10 years, neither slowing nor fueling the explosive growth of medical costs.)

What seems clear as we learn ever more about the health care takeover is that the very premises for passing the law – to increase access and reduce costs – are not being honored as it begins to take effect. And this is just the beginning. America needs a plan that works, and on November 2, your vote for Nan Hayworth will be a step towards achieving that. The choice, too, is clear.

The primary season is over, and Republicans have done me the immense honor of electing me their nominee for U.S. Congress by a 40-point margin! I will officially be on the Republican, Conservative, and Independence Party ballot lines in November, and with your continued support, I will bring the same strength of purpose and clarity of message to John Hall this fall!

(Click the following links to see countywide results for Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Westchester, and Rockland.)

Now comes the really hard work. We have to get our message out — not just to Republicans, but to everyone in the 19th District — about reviving the American economy through shrinking the size and scope of the federal government and getting Congress and the White House off the backs of American workers and employers. We know how that’s going to happen. For starters:

Cut taxes on individuals (to stimulate commerce) and businesses (to spur job creation).

Slash federal spending, starting with suspending the various failed “stimulus” packages and refusing any more bailouts.

Repeal/replace/defund the unconstitutional federal takeover of health care.

If we can return to a government that the Founders, in their wisdom, envisioned for us, we can return to a government that will allow our economy to thrive again, and our people to live in liberty.

I cannot thank you enough for your unfailing energy, enthusiasm, and faith this past year on the trail. Now we’ve got a scant seven weeks to build this momentum to an intensity that even Rep. Hall can’t ignore. Our work is cut out for us; if we can all hold together through November, I’m ready to be your next Congresswoman!

Onward to victory, and once again: thank you!

The following is a statement from Nan Hayworth on the unveiling of President Obama’s new $50 billion stimulus package.

NEWS RELEASE
Sept. 7, 2010, Carmel

Congressional contender Dr. Nan Hayworth said today that President Obama’s proposal for another $50 billion in stimulus spending not only is unlikely to jump-start the economy, but is precisely the opposite of what should be done. The Republican-endorsed candidate’s view is that businesses will hire again once they can be certain they won’t be burdened by vast new taxes and costs, such as those the
health care reform law is already imposing.

“This newest ‘stimulus’ package is another example of the failed spending policies of President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — spending for which John Hall has voted again and again,” Hayworth said. “Jobless stimulus has already taken nearly a trillion dollars from the American taxpayer, and it has failed miserably. Despite assurances to the contrary from Nancy Pelosi and this administration, the unemployment rate remains at 9.6 percent and GDP growth has been anemic at best. Repeating the ‘stimulus’ mistake will not make things better.”

Hayworth called on John Hall and President Obama to commit to extending the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, which would provide genuine relief to businesses and employers whose investment and growth would spur economic recovery:

“In a time of economic downturn, Congress should do all it can to foster private sector growth, not threaten still greater federal domination of what should be the greatest free market in the world. That means we must stop the damaging ‘stimulus’ spending, and we must reduce taxes.”

Hayworth has also proposed immediate suspension of the health care law, which will further reassure employers that they will not be penalized for hiring. Hayworth contends that the law must be replaced with workable solutions that won’t bankrupt the country.

“Remain calm! All is well!”

When Chip Diller was famously trampled by the mob at the parade in the movie Animal House, he was yelling desperately in hopes of saving a Homecoming parade. And that was funny. But when the people supporting our Administration and Congress’s failed fiscal policy continually flail about in denial very much like Chip, as we’ve discussed on my Facebook page, it’s not funny anymore.

Unemployment edged up in August, from 9.5% to 9.6%. Not to worry! President Obama says we’re “headed in the right direction.” Really, sir? There’s a lot of skepticism about that analysis–hardly surprising given that the President cherry-picked snippets of data from the Labor report for his press conference, ignoring that:

August still saw more jobs lost than created: 54,000 jobs gone, in the third straight month of losses;

approximately 100,000 people joined the job market simply through population growth, meaning job growth is still falling behind;

the Labor Department’s “U-6 unemployment” reading, which includes people who can’t find full-time work or have stopped looking altogether, has jumped to 16.7%.

That last metric is really the most jarring. The U-6 rate tells us that fully one in six Americans who are willing and able to work a full-time job can’t, because the work simply isn’t out there.

So, why is nobody hiring one-sixth of the eligible American workforce? The answer is that employers are petrified of what Nancy Pelosi, John Hall, and the rest of the Congressional majority are going to do to them if they try. Americans for Tax Reform is still counting down the days until the coming tsunami of tax hikes starts hitting the beach, including allowing the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts to die, the onset of the Democrats’ health care bureaucracy, and an onslaught of increased expenses and taxes on small businesses.

President Obama (and Speaker Pelosi and Mr. Hall), you won’t get a recovery if you put enormous new burdens on the very people who are needed to power it. If you want to avoid your policies’ being trampled by a massive economic decline, cut the taxes and stop the spending. We have some great ideas for you on our campaign website!

You’ve been reading it here, on our website, on our Facebook and Twitter feeds, and all over the media: even now, with their backs against the wall, the President and Congressional Democrats don’t get it. John Hall doesn’t get it. Against the express will of the American public, President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and John Hall — who has voted with Nancy Pelosi 98% of the time — insist on expanding the federal government’s influence ever more, smothering our private sector and threatening not only our financial future but our unique Constitutional freedoms.

The “summer of recovery” has turned into a summer of stagnation, and those responsible for it are scrambling to avoid consequences, deflecting attention, or pretending that things are fine. Nancy Pelosi talks of investigating Americans who’ve simply spoken their minds; President Obama has decided that the definition of the word “tax” can be changed according to political convenience; John Hall hides behind a colleague to answer questions on those rare occasions when he actually meets with constituents.

Treating reality and accountability as optional may have worked in the election of 2008, but in 2010 our voters are about to render a hard reckoning on what really works and what absolutely doesn’t work. Those of us old enough to remember the new morning in America when we elected President Reagan after the disastrous Carter years are ready to repeat that triumph and get the government off our backs.

That’s why I’m running–to renew America’s promise just as President Reagan did: to renew our faith in the Constitution; to renew our economy and create jobs by relieving our citizens of punishing taxation and suffocating regulation. My simple mission is to liberate you to spend and invest and renew the economy right here at home, and renew the opportunities that our friends and neighbors here so urgently need.

And, as much as my team and I pour every ounce of energy into the quest we all share, we can’t do it without you. Please join our Summer Sprint Drive by contributing as generously as you can before this Wednesday, August 25, to power us over the summer towards Election Day. And, after you contribute what you can spare, please call 10 friends (or 25 friends!) and ask them to do the same. With your support, we cannot fail. Onward together, and thank you!

Democrats are scrambling to explain the President's unpopularity, all while dancing around the obvious.

Some observers from the left side of the political spectrum have been bending themselves into pretzels trying to explain why President Obama isn’t making headway with the American public in the midterm election campaign push. Their efforts would be comical if they didn’t reflect a political philosophy that has cost us so dearly.

Matt Bai, in the New York Times this week, does state at the outset the Republican view that the President is unpopular because he has pushed government control of the economy when the majority of Americans oppose it (for good reason, starting with the fact that it doesn’t work). But that’s just too — what would be the word here — obvious for a variety of Democrats who weigh in on the issue. Apparently we common-sense types are just too unsophisticated to recognize that in fact the President’s problem is that he puts himself in a “legislative box,” per former Clinton chief of staff John Podesta, now at the left-wing think tank Center for American Progress. What, pray tell, is a “legislative box”? The gist of his tortured explanation is that the President is actually so gifted a legislator, so committed to sweeping policy change, that he has been the victim of vicious Congressional politics, which has kept him from getting his message effectively to the American people.

Ah, yes, there it is again: the victim motif, the blame being placed again on anyone but President Obama and the leaders of this Statist-dominated Congress. Meanwhile, the Congressional Budget Office’s new prediction of a deficit exceeding $1.3 trillion for 2010, and the Labor Department’s report that jobless claims last week jumped to the highest level since last Thanksgiving, provide fresh evidence that we need to stop the decline by immediately suspending implementation of the new health bureaucracy, by reducing taxes, and by stopping the jobless “stimulus” and bailout spending. When the leaders of this Congress proclaim that we must throw more money into bankrupt pension schemes, bad mortgage investments, and a long list of other infuriating pet projects, they are actually just using your taxpayer dollars to buy themselves votes. And yet they are mystified that the American public is rejecting them.

To Mr. Bai, Mr. Podesta, and all those who are doing the equivalent of watching a drunk driver careening towards a brick wall at 90 mph (which is a far more apt analogy than the President’s tired “car in the ditch”; if the economy were just in a ditch and not about to crash, we’d consider ourselves fortunate, and how sad is that?) and thinking they ought to have a word with the bricklayers. Sometimes the most obvious explanation is actually the correct one, and the President has no one to blame but himself.

A note to Mr. Obama, Ms. Pelosi, and their faithful Congressman, Mr. Hall: time to grow up; take responsibility for your reckless spending and irresponsible, enterprise-choking, job-killing legislation; and either reverse course, or prepare to be replaced in November. Given the evidence thus far, the most obvious expectation we common-sense Americans should have is that we’re going to see a lot of new small-government, free-enterprise faces in the Congress come January.

In December, 1799, President George Washington contracted a severe throat infection. His doctors–distinguished experts all–treated him with calomel, to induce vomiting, and bloodletting. When their patient’s condition deteriorated, they treated even more vigorously, giving more calomel and taking more blood in the hopes that this time they’d succeed.

George Washington died of dehydration, blood loss, and choking from the uncontrolled infection. His very well-meaning physicians had actually hastened his death.

In August, 2010, the republic that George Washington helped found is in the midst of a severe economic recession. Her leaders have consulted the experts they respect, and the therapy they have chosen is to drain dollars out of the private sector so that the federal government can redistribute them, and to pile thousands of pages of new regulations onto businesses and employers.

Let’s see how our patient is doing:

Indicator #1: The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) predicts a deficit of over $1.3 trillion for 2010. CBO also predicts that the economy’s annual growth will average a feeble 2% next year, and unemployment won’t fall back anywhere near a generally healthy 5% until the end of 2014.

Indicator #2: Speaking of unemployment, the U.S. Labor Department reports jobless claims last week jumped to the highest level seen since before last Thanksgiving. Bloomberg.com says the reports tell us that “companies are stepping up the pace of firings as the economy slows…A survey released yesterday also showed companies expect their costs of health-care benefits to rise 8.9 percent next year, a product of the overhaul signed into law by President Barack Obama.”

Diagnosis: The treatment isn’t working. Turns out that redistributive “stimulus” and enterprise-choking regulations actually weaken our economy. More of the same will worsen the misery. Yet our Administration and its supporters refuse to acknowledge reality.

Plan: Time for new leadership in Congress, with a plan that will let the private sector hang on to precious dollars and use them to grow the economy and jobs:

Make the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent.

Reduce the capital gains tax.

Eliminate the alternative minimum tax.

Eliminate the estate tax, also known as the “death tax”.

Repeal the job-killing, growth-arresting, liberty-smothering new health care bureaucracy passed by the Pelosi Congress and the Obama Administration.

I’m running as a doctor to change our Congress and heal our economy, and our campaign can only succeed with your vote and your support. Please, make a contribution at www.NanHayworth.com (August 25 is our next big deadline), display a yard sign or bumper sticker (call or email us to get all you need!), write a letter to the editor, call 10 friends and invite them to get involved. If all of us work together, America will come back from this recession and be healthy for another 200 years!

The following is a press release from the Hayworth campaign, dated and distributed 18 Aug 2010.

Statement from Dr. Nan Hayworth regarding Nancy Pelosi’s recent comments:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is calling for critics of the planned mosque in New York to be investigated. John Hall, Congressman for NY-19, has voted with Nancy Pelosi 98 percent of the time. Does John Hall agree with Nancy Pelosi that those raising questions should be investigated?

And how does he feel about the deeper issue of Nancy Pelosi’s using tactics from the playbook of the old Soviet Union to intimidate Americans who are speaking their minds? I fully support the entire Bill of Rights, including the First Amendment. I do not question the legal right of the mosque’s organizers to build. I do continue to call on them to respect the profound pain associated with Ground Zero and to make a true gesture of peace: either voluntarily relocate it, or allow a church and synagogue to be housed there also, as a demonstration of interfaith tolerance.

Nancy Pelosi’s comments recall yet again how, under her leadership, the majority in this Congress, including John Hall, has gone against the best interests of the citizens of the 19th District. On government-run health care, on spending, on taxes — the list is long and growing — John Hall does not understand and does not represent us.
